If I were in the industry myself, I would have enough data on hand to be able to do an analysis of the industry and the main players. Or I could do a user profile based on our company's clients. But since I'm a layman, we can barely make up the numbers with this.
Competitor analysis
I searched around on Google and the general idea I found was content + search ads, but no one would share such a matter of trade secrets on the internet, right? Then we have to start with competitor research, originally I thought I had to sacrifice my ego to explore the bottom of the P site, and then found that I was overly concerned.
Analysis tools: Similarweb , Ahrefs, SEMrush
The analysis object: 14 independent sites in the adult category, both like http://adameve.com and like sexualalpha, a dark horse in the last two years, and this kind of strong content site like kinkytoy. store, which does not advertise and relies 77% on natural traffic. We will try to bring out some of the various categories to open your eyes.
Analysis dimensions: traffic sources - Similarweb website traffic dimensions (natural, referral, EDM, social, natural, search ads, display ads), website domain registration time, website operation time (due to the main use of Ahrefs, operation time as far back as 2013)
Preliminary findings.
1: 78% of the websites are using keyword ads, especially several websites with monthly traffic of over a million, with keyword ads accounting for more than 20% of the total, and the websites that voted for ads are a few old websites built in 2016 and before. But the kinkazoid website and the sexualalpha website, which were built in 2019, are not doing search ads.
2: Of the 3 sites that do not use ads, both have an unusually high proportion of natural traffic, e.g. 66.7% for sexualalpha, 85% for kinkazoid, and 27% for fetishtoybox, while 99% of the referral traffic comes from the fetlife site.
3: 2019 saw the emergence of 2 good new sites, kinkazoid and sexualalpha, both of which have a strong content approach.
4: Social traffic is overwhelmingly Reddit and accounts for over 70% of the traffic, but still this oddball sexualalpha site built in 2016 accounts for 10.56% of the social traffic and most of it comes from twitter and FB.
5: Display advertising only 28% voted, of which the first two accounted for a relatively high proportion of about 20%. The three affiliate channels shareasale, skimlink and conversantmedia account for the majority of the display advertising, while the display sites do not accumulate significantly. Those that did display advertising were
Opportunity analysis.
1) Traffic channels- On the surface there is a diversification, such as direct traffic, natural traffic, search ads and display ads. But we found that neither of the two sites that entered from 2019 did any advertising, of which there are two possibilities, first : it is that the two sites do not want to advertise and have enough hard power to spell out content themselves; second : as search ads and shopping ads are restricted to adult use category ads from before 2019. Personally, I'm leaning towards the second possibility.
It is very likely that it is not that these two sites that have sprung up in 2019 do not want to advertise, but that the advertising platforms are restricting new adult-use sites from doing so. I searched for information on this and found out that Google AdWords has restrictions on adult products, and to be precise, ads are allowed under strict restrictions, but anyone who has done FB and Google Ads knows that ad accounts can be blocked at will: portal.
2) Natural traffic from SEO - As we know from the above paragraph, easy access to traffic has been limited to natural traffic, referral traffic and social and EMD. This is not good news for new sites, but we still see 2 good new sites rising in 2019, kinkazoid and sexualalpha, both with a strong content approach and neither of them advertising.
We can guess that these two sites have no choice but to do this, as everyone knows that SEO is a very expensive and time consuming way to build up traffic, but it is worth thinking that these two sites have 630,000 and one 200,000 traffic a month, which is quite an achievement.
3) Social media - Reddit - From the previous article we see that almost all the websites social media traffic overwhelmingly from Reddit, we all know that there are many communities on Reddit, a lot of NSFW content (old drivers know what I'm talking about), I have no in-depth research, but there are definitely places to find some traffic channels.
I have to say that the marketing team on this site has done a great job and is very well thought out, from the way sexualalpha has gone into the details of driving traffic from Twitter and FB. For in-depth research, you will need to go to these two platforms to find information about the site, so if you are interested, you can take a closer look.
